Minority Investment | SL Benfica (Portugal)
Strategic US Investment Partner Introduced
Challenge:
SL Benfica, one of Europe’s most storied football clubs, was open to minority investment to strengthen its global reach while preserving its identity and majority control. The challenge lay in sourcing a sophisticated investor aligned with the club’s long-term ambitions. An investor capable of contributing strategic value without disrupting local governance or fan trust.
Our Role:
Blackbridge Sports acted as deal originator and adviser to Lenore Sports Partners, a US based sports investment firm with a long-term, values-driven approach. We facilitated the introduction to Benfica, supported relationship-building between the parties, and guided Lenore through the complexities of minority ownership in a member-owned club. Our role spanned initial engagement, structuring, and deal negotiation with the club and its leadership.
Outcome:
The investment marked a rare and significant minority transaction at one of Europe’s top clubs. Lenore’s entry brings long-term capital, cross-border expertise, and strategic ambition to support Benfica’s global growth. The deal was executed with precision and discretion, reinforcing Blackbridge Sports’ capability to deliver high-level investment opportunities in elite European football while navigating sensitive governance landscapes.

Strategic Investment  I  Peterborough United FC (England)
50% Partnership with Canadian Consortium
Challenge:
Peterborough United FC sought strategic capital to accelerate growth while avoiding a full sale. The objective was to secure a long-term partner who could contribute financially and operationally, without compromising the club’s identity, culture, or leadership, particularly with Chairman Darragh MacAnthony based in the US.
Our Role:
Blackbridge Sports identified and introduced a Canadian consortium with a strong track record in North American sports and a collaborative ownership philosophy. We advised on deal structuring, valuation alignment, and governance terms to deliver a balanced 50/50 partnership, including asset acquisition (notably the stadium).
Outcome:
The deal injected fresh capital and secured a like-minded international partner while retaining continuity in leadership. The Canadian group has taken an active role in commercial development, global strategy, and football operations, creating a transatlantic ownership model that strengthens the club’s foundations and international potential. The partnership enhances financial flexibility, opens up global opportunities, and ensures long-term alignment between both ownership groups.

Takeover  I  Barnsley FC (England)
Acquisition by Chien Lee & Consortium
Challenge:
In 2017, Barnsley FC was quietly on the market with limited interest, a well-run, financially stable Championship club with deep roots and a proud local legacy under Patrick Cryne. The key challenge was sourcing a buyer who could respect the club’s identity while injecting new capital and strategic ambition. Despite its strong fundamentals, Barnsley remained under the radar internationally, and executing a discreet, timely process was essential.
Our Role:
Blackbridge Sports brokered the transaction, identifying and advising Chien Lee and his international consortium, a rising force in football investment with a data-driven, long-term vision. We facilitated introductions, met with the club’s manager, managed sensitive multi-stakeholder negotiations, and supported the structuring of a complex and protracted takeover process.
When the buyer’s identity became public, the deal came under intense media scrutiny, adding further pressure to an already delicate situation. Despite occasional friction on both sides, we kept the transaction on track and ultimately delivered the deal successfully.
Outcome:
The acquisition marked a defining moment – one of the earliest steps in a now well-established global multi-club ownership strategy. The new ownership brought international capital, operational reform, and strategic clarity to Barnsley FC, with high-profile figures such as Billy Beane later joining the project. The transaction set a precedent for international investment into the EFL and reinforced Blackbridge Sports’ reputation for executing complex, high-impact football club deals.

Takeover  I  Algeciras CF (Spain)
Acquisition by Mac Lackey & Fútbol Coalition
Challenge:
Algeciras CF, a 114-year-old Spanish club competing in the third division, was seeking new ownership to modernise operations and expand its international presence. Despite its rich history and strategic location on Spain’s southern coast, the club faced challenges in capitalizing on tourism, merchandising, and global fan engagement.
Our Role:
Blackbridge Sports facilitated the acquisition by introducing Charlotte-based entrepreneur Mac Lackey and his organization, Fútbol Coalition, to Algeciras CF. We advised on deal structuring, stakeholder negotiations, and strategic planning to ensure a seamless transition. The partnership also brought in Ramón Robert, former CEO of Espanyol, to oversee day-to-day operations as CEO of Algeciras CF.
Outcome:
The acquisition marked a significant step in bridging American and European soccer markets. Under the new ownership, Algeciras CF has initiated several modernization efforts, including facility upgrades, a new coaching staff, and a switch to Nike as the kit provider. Additionally, the club has established partnerships, such as with the International Soccer Academy, to create pathways for American players to train and compete in Spain. These initiatives aim to enhance the club’s financial stability, global reach, and competitive performance

Minority Investment  I  Truro City FC (England)
Strategic Capital Partner Introduced
Challenge:
Truro City FC, a storied non-league club with ambitions to climb the English football pyramid, was seeking strategic investment to support its development both on and off the pitch. Operating in the lower tiers, the club faced funding constraints, infrastructure limitations, and a need for renewed energy to achieve its long-term growth objectives.
Our Role:
Blackbridge Sports sourced and introduced a strategic minority investor aligned with the club’s vision and values. We facilitated direct dialogue between the parties, supported the investor’s entry through due diligence and structuring, and ensured alignment on future governance, capital deployment, and growth strategy.
Outcome:
The minority investment brought in new capital and a commercially minded partner, strengthening the club’s financial position and enabling investment into key areas; including squad development, marketing, and long-term facilities planning. The deal also preserved existing leadership while injecting new capabilities, reinforcing Blackbridge Sports’ ability to deliver capital solutions tailored to ambitious lower-league clubs.
